Rural Alaskan Communities Music Outreach
Growing up in Fairbanks, I benefited greatly from the robust music education and world-class teachers available at that time. But it wasn't until I moved away for college that I realized just how unusual it was, and is, for a small community in the sub-arctic to have such high-level arts training available. Ever since, I've endeavored to give back to the state that raised me so well by organizing, and often self-funding, music outreach to small Alaskan communities when I'm in the state.
As Alaskans know, getting to most of the state, even some places on the road system, is difficult, time-consuming, and expensive. I've organized these events for nearly two decades now, often bringing musicians from the Lower 48 (and Ireland!) along with me. Sometimes there's been outside funding, sometimes not. When there is, I'm very grateful. When there's not, I provide the funding myself.
This page is here for anyone who would like to help defray expenses for Chris Ranney's and my mini-tour of Alaskan communities in April. (Our February tour was entirely cancelled after I tested positive for Covid in the Fairbanks airport a few minutes after landing.)
I hope to be able to make these rural outreach events a regular occurrence, bringing musicians, dancers, singers, and actors from my NYC life up to Alaska to share their talents in small communities. Any money raised beyond the expenses for the April events will go towards the next batch of concerts and workshops in rural communities.
Please reach out with questions, ideas, or suggestions on where the next outreach should take place. ([email protected]) I'll keep all contributors updated via email as plans come to fruition.
Thank you!
